Ideate, Inc. Features Lionakis in Its First Ideate Explorer for Revit Study in Success

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
SAN FRANCISCO, California – 11/19/2013 - Ideate, Inc., a leading Autodesk Authorized Developer and Autodesk solutions provider offering quality software, training, support and custom consulting services to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry with a special focus on Building Information Modeling (BIM), today announced the publication of its first Ideate Explorer for Revit-focused Study in Success, “One Secret Ingredient in Lionakis’ Quality Control—Ideate Explorer for Revit.”

California-based Lionakis has played a significant role in shaping the built environment throughout the State of California for more than a century. The multi-disciplined privately held firm specializes in architecture, engineering, interiors, planning, sustainability and graphics, and ranks in the top 25 of California’s leading architectural firms.

The firm’s Quality Control (QC) process provides a system for verifying and maintaining a desired level of quality in its BIM files by planning, continued inspection, and corrective action as required. Lionakis’ approach to its BIM projects includes firm-wide standards and a Revit-strong design staff. It also includes an in-house Design Technology (DT) team of Revit experts who create and maintain the Lionakis Revit master template and help the entire staff keep their Revit projects standardized and clean.

In the same way that the DT team peers deeply into Lionakis’ Revit files, the Study in Success peers deeply into Lionakis’ QC processes, with special attention to the ways Lionakis ensures confidence and trust in ever more complex and potentially error-prone BIM models. AEC firms of all sizes and members of related industries will have special interest in the Study in Success.

Kirk Cox, Design Technology Application Manager, Design Technology Studio, Lionakis, explains the vital nature of QC by saying, “It is always best to get the project back on the right path so the team can be as productive as possible. Having an effective QA/QC process translates to dollars and cents at the end of the day.”

Bob Palioca, President, Ideate Inc., says, “While we have published many articles about Ideate BIMLink, this is our first Ideate Explorer for Revit-focused Study in Success. We are gratified that our solution is helping to ensure project accuracy, reduce errors and save time, and we are pleased that Ideate Explorer for Revit has become indispensable for Lionakis’ staff training. We are overwhelmingly delighted with our customer’s success, and we are honored to share Lionakis’ valuable QC insights with the AEC community.”

Ideate has published “One Secret Ingredient in Lionakis’ Quality Control—Ideate Explorer for Revit” online. Download the Study in Success at http://www.ideateinc.com/ideas/case.html.

BIM Workflow for Roads and Highways

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
This year, Ideate is offering a new class based on the BIM for Road and Highway design to go along with Autodesk’s new BIM Specialist: Roads and Highways certification.

Although the concept of BIM or Building Information Modeling has been around for years, its integration into the world of Road and Highway design has been relatively slow when compared to that of Building design. The 2014 Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite provides users with core products for use in BIM modeling for Roads and Highways. In this article, we’ll talk about the products involved, and some the roles they play in the BIM Workflow process.

When looking at the list of products in the Infrastructure Design suite – Ultimate version, we’ll find applications for many stages of the project lifecycle. For the purpose of our blog, we’ll break this down into three main areas.

Stage 1: Planning and Preliminary Design
Stage 2: Detailed Design and Documentation
Stage 3: Construction Simulation/Management

For Stage 1, Autodesk InfraWorks is available to combine both existing and proposed data sources and create a virtual 3D model of a planned development. Autodesk InfraWorks is compatible with GIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Point Cloud and other data types and also includes tools for creating proposed features and cloud-based profile optimization for road design.

Once models are created, Autodesk InfraWorks also includes tools for creating storyboards, virtual fly-throughs, and scenarios for communicating design concepts. Finally, Autodesk InfraWorks models can easily be exported and imported into Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D for continuing on to the next stage of the design process.

The Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D modeling tools provide civil engineers with the ability to add large amounts of information to the models for use in the BIM process. Built-in analysis tools like Storm and Sanitary Analysis and Hydraflow, along with  plan production tools to automatically cut Plan and Profile and Section Sheets make AutoCAD Civil 3D an excellent program to use for Stage 2 of our workflow. Additional tools for Quantity Take-offs, earthwork, and material volume calculations also provide the necessary data for construction cost estimates based on the information contained in our models.

Once designs are finalized, we can move on to Stage 3 of our BIM Workflow.  Model components can be exported back to Autodesk InfraWorks for high quality visualizations of the final design, and imported into Navisworks Manage for construction management and simulation. Both applications are also compatible with files from Autodesk Revit as well as other software packages, giving us the ability to create realistic composite models using data received from all parties involved in a project.

Within Navisworks Manage, the Timeliner tool can be used for creating 4D and 5D construction simulations by linking model components to timelines created in project scheduling software like Microsoft Project or Primavera.

Along with the Timeliner, Navisworks Manage also includes Clash Detection for detecting clearance violations and hard clashes between model components.  Simulated construction sequencing and virtual clash detection help save time and money through early detection of issues that could lead to costly redesigns and change orders if found during construction.

So there you have it, Autodesk InfraWorks for preliminary planning stage design, Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D for detailed design and construction documentation, then back to Autodesk InfraWorks or into Autodesk Navisworks Manage for advanced visualizations, construction simulation, clash detection and construction management. A BIM Workflow for Road and Highway design using applications included in the 2014 Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suites.

Ideate BIMLink and Facilities Management 101

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
  1. Your engineer/architect has modeled your new facility in Revit and the building is done
  2. Get your hands on the Building model, you own it, right?
  3. Open up Revit (trial version works fine – get it here).
  4. You launch Ideate BIMLink and you export the COBie_Type and COBie_Components to an Excel file. Whether you intend to do COBie or not these links are a great way to quickly get all of the asset list that you need to get started.

    1. If your budget permitted, you required the model to be updated to reflect as-built conditions. Congratulations, you get to skip ahead to Step 7.
    2. If the model does not reflect the as-built conditions then you should pay your architect and engineers to fill out the Excel files from step 4 above or have your own staff fill out any missing info. This can be done with a tablet as outlined in this earlier post.
    3. Congratulations, you now you have a complete list of all the building assets for use in managing the building’s maintenance and operations. That was easy!

What’s New in Revit MEP 2014: This “Fitting” is Just Right! Ability to Embed .CSV File to Revit MEP Fitting Families

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown

Revit MEP 2014 has some great enhancements, one of the best is the ability to embed the .CSV file onto Revit MEP fittings, and other types of families as well.

One of the most common issues that we come across when supporting Revit MEP for designers at Ideate, Inc. is the common problem of “custom” Pipe Fittings that do not display the correct proportional (connector sizes are indicating the correct diameter, just not the graphical appearance) size. The main reason for this is because the Lookup Table file ( or .CSV file ) for that family isn’t found. To overcome this issue, and others, the ability to embed the .CSV file has been added.

This new feature is different in this release of Revit in four distinct areas:

    1. Pipe and conduit fittings use the function: size_lookup.
    2. “Lookup Table Name” is a user defined parameter, which can be modified or removed.
    3. The “.csv” is removed from table names in formulae. See the following example:
      • e.g. [size_lookup (“Pipe Fitting - Generic,” “FOD,” Nominal Diameter + 0' 0 1/8" Nominal Diameter)]
    4. A new Lookup Tables Manage… button has been added. This is a new button available in the Family Types window to manage lookup tables. The Manage Lookup Tables dialog lists all related lookup tables for the family. It provides the ability to import, export or delete lookup tables for the family.  See the following dialog:

One of the major benefits of this feature is that with the .CSV data embedded into the family, that family will then “know” how to model themselves, which if the file was “not found” could lead to unexpected results.

Using this ability to add the lookup function to the family will provide a convenient means to not only define parametric fitting content, it will be flexible for use even if not all considerations are accounted for in the “embedded” lookup tables by the use of the default value parameter in the function.

    Autodesk Products + Mac OS

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
Ideate, Inc. gets many questions about the use of Mac operating system (OS) and Autodesk products. There are Autodesk products, like AutoCAD for the Mac, which run natively on the Mac OS. However, many Autodesk products, including Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Navisworks, run only in a Windows OS environment. There seems to me an ever increasing number of Ideate customers with Mac laptop and desktop hardware.

PROBLEM: What are the ways to use Autodesk products in a Mac environment? What workflow does Autodesk support?

ANSWER: There are two ways to use Autodesk Products on a Mac.
    1. Apple Boot Camp This is free for Mac users. This provides for a ‘boot’ level decision for the user. You either boot into Windows or you boot into a MAC operating system. The total RAM on the computer is available to either Windows or Mac. Some users have found boot level decision problematic if they are using both Mac and Windows programs (because you have to reboot to go between Mac and Windows).
    2. Virtual Machine The two most popular products are Parallels and VM Ware. Either of these two programs cost under $100. The virtual machine approach allows you to run Windows ‘inside’ of the Mac OS. You can get about 75% of the RAM allocated to Windows, so having enough RAM is important. Users are able to run both Mac and Windows programs at the same time.
    What Workflow Does Autodesk Support?
In the post ‘Parallels + Fusion + Boot camp + Autodesk Products’ from Autodesk, Autodesk Technical Support outlines the three ways to implement and which methodology is supported. Also note the work-around for those who prefer to point the virtual machine to the Mac Boot Camp partition.

Ideate will continue to monitor this situation and will keep you informed.

Don’t forget to look through the great features our Ideate Technical Team has found in the new 2014 releases for Revit Structure, Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Navisworks, Civil 3D, AutoCAD and more: ideateinc.com/2014

New Crop Region Functionality in Revit 2014

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
In coordination with the Ideate, Inc. YouTube video on Autodesk Revit 2014 – Non-Rectangular Crop Regions, this blog describes how the Revit 2014 Crop Region and callout tools have undergone a few improvements.

One of the new features within Revit 2014 is the ability to create non-rectangular Crop Regions within 2D views. This has been a long standing request since the year 2000. This feature eliminates the time-consuming task of creating Masking Regions with a hole to represent an irregular shaped viewport.

This new functionality allows for a more efficient sheet layout process. Common to many other Revit user interface behaviors, the ability to edit the Crop Region through the use of sketch lines in a sketch mode make this tool very intuitive. Figure 1.

    Figure 1
Additionally as the Callout tool is an extension of the Crop Boundary tool, it would only be natural to also have the ability of creating non-rectangular callouts. In Revit 2014, the Callout tool now includes the ability of using one of two tools to create the callout. A the standard Rectangle tool and a new Sketch tool. The Sketch tool enters you into a sketch mode where linear closed shapes can be used to create non-rectangular callouts. Figure 2.

    Figure 2

Upon completion of the sketch, the non rectangular callout is created. This new view’s crop region takes on the shape of the sketch. Direct manipulation of the shape can be accomplished by using intuitive grips directly on the callout and crop region.

Any callout and/or crop region can also be reset to its default rectangular shape by selecting the Reset button in the context sensitive menu.

Don’t forget to look through other great features our Ideate Technical Team has found in the new 2014 releases for Revit MEP, Revit Structure, Civil 3D, AutoCAD and more: ideateinc.com/2014

Renaming and Renumbering in Revit, Simplified with Ideate BIMLink

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
One of the more tedious and labor-intensive BIM tasks confronting architects and engineers is the act of renumbering or renaming elements. We’ve had customers who require that all of the system families, for example, are prefixed with their company name. So instead of “Wall: 1-HR” we need “Wall: ABC_1-HR.” Likewise, even simple design changes can set off a chain reaction that requires significant renumbering of details, views, or equipment. Many times furnishings, fixtures, and equipment need to be renumbered in the middle of a project because new rooms or floors have been added, and the equipment numbering needs to align with the room and floor numbering schemas.

Naming and numbering tasks can also be driven by an owner requirement for external database compatibility. The COBie specification, which is now mandated for federal government projects in the US, is a prime example of this. For those of you not familiar with COBie you can learn more at the Whole Building Design Guide website. The COBie Guide* makes it clear that “During design, the Architect shall be responsible to resolve all conflicts in duplicative naming by their own staff and all consulting engineers.” This sounds like a very daunting task but with Ideate BIMLink you can turn a day-long project into a (5) minute task.

This video demonstrates how Ideate BIMLink can be used to create and manage the unique type, component, and space naming requirements mandated by this COBie specification.

    (View video on YouTube)

For information on other kinds of renumber tasks, refer also to our Door Numbering blog post.

A typical COBie project will require at least (4) iterations:
    • one for 35% Design Development,
    • another at 100% Construction Documentation,
    • another at the Beneficial Occupancy stage,
    • and lastly within the As-Built documents
That’s a lot of data entry!

Whether your renaming/renumbering task is driven by COBie or any other reason let Ideate BIMLink + Excel do the heavy lifting and put your architects and engineers onto higher order tasks.

COBie + Revit – The Skinny from Ideate

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
I enjoyed making the rounds to the COBie + Revit community in the Bay Area this week; taking the opportunity to share my recent research into this topic with design and construction professionals at the Sacramento, East Bay, and San Francisco Revit user groups. My presentation focused on where COBie requirements intersect with BIM and then specifically how the Autodesk Revit Toolkit and Ideate BIMLink support managing this information.

If you are interested in learning more about this topic, here are some the links I shared during my presentation.

Free the Walls – Publishing Unconnected Wall Height Data with Ideate BIMLink

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
It’s hard to do a detailed analysis or cost estimate if you don’t know the height of the walls in your Autodesk Revit project. Ideate BIMLink exposes this information as well as other hard to access wall data such as phase, design option, orientation, and location data (XYZ). Many of our VDC customers take this data and move it forward, but of course it can also be pushed back into Revit for use in tags or schedules, if needed. This video shows the simple process of extracting all of the wall height data and then pushing it back into a project parameter so that it can be displayed in a schedule.

While the technique shown here relates to the unconnected wall height values, this same procedure is being used by many Ideate BIMLink customers to push other kinds of data into schedules or tags. Managing occupancy data is another very similar workflow that can also be used to save time and improve accuracy.

Missing Something in a Revit View? 33 Steps to Find Stuff.

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
Recently David Haynes, Ideate Director of Consulting passed the following tidbit around the office and I thought it could be of use to you. Thanks for the tips David.

Can’t see it in a view? Here are 33 possible reasons…

Checklist: 33 Steps to Find Stuff in Revit.

    Check to see if:
    1. The element or category is temporarily hidden
    2. The element or category is hidden in the view
    3. The element is being obscured by another element
    4. The element’s category or subcategory is hidden in the view
    5. The element is outside the view’s view range
    6. The view’s far clip depth is not sufficient to show the element
    7. The element resides on a work set that is not loaded within the project
    8. The element resides on a work set that is not visible in the view
    9. The element resides on a work set that is not loaded in a linked file
    10. The element resides on a work set that is not visible in a linked file
    11. The element resides within a group (detail model) and it has been excluded from the group
    12. The element is part of a design option that is not visible in the view
    13. The element is part of a linked file that is not visible in the view
    14. The element has one or more of its edges overridden to display as “Invisible Lines”
    15. The element is a family and none of its geometry is set to be visible in the view type
    16. The element is a family and none of its geometry is set to be visible at the view’s detail level
    17. The element is set to not be visible at the category’s detail level
    18. The element has been placed outside the view's crop region (visible extents)
    19. The element is an annotation element and does not reside entirely within the annotation crop region
    20. The element’s phase settings or the view’s phase settings prevent the element from displaying in the view
    21. The view’s discipline is prohibiting the visibility of the element
    22. The element is affected by a filter applied to the view
    23. The element is subject to an element override, set to background color
    24. The element is subject to a category override, set to background color
    25. The element style is set to background color
    26. The element is constrained to a scope boxes that is not visible in the view
    27. The extents of the element itself don’t permit it to be seen
    28. The element is a mass, and “Show Mass” is turned off
    29. The element’s host view has been deleted (area boundaries)
    30. The view’s scale is prohibiting the element’s visibility
    31. The element is a linked instance with coordinates too great for Revit to handle
    32. The user has incorrectly identified the link instance to which the element belongs
    33. The element is in a link that is not in its correct position

Ideate, Inc. Publishes Jasmax and BVN Use Case Study in Success

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
SAN FRANCISCO, California – 09/11/2012 - Ideate, Inc., a leading Autodesk® Authorized Developer and Autodesk solutions provider offering quality software, training, support and custom consulting services to the AEC industry, today announced the publication of a Study in Success specific to a use case of Ideate-developed software, Ideate BIMLink for Autodesk Revit.

The study, “BVN with Jasmax Makes 3.5 Million Combinations Workable in Minutes with Ideate BIMLink for Revit,” details how with the assistance of Ideate BIMLink, BVN Architecture of Australia in strategic partnership with Jasmax, New Zealand’s largest architectural practice, were able to manipulate, manage and harness about 3.5 million sunscreen element combinations to create a randomized pattern for a large building façade. The endeavor would have been next to impossible before the advent of Ideate BIMLink.

Specifically designed sun screens were required to maximize the shading efficiency of the façade, minimize the need for mechanical systems, and provide natural light while reducing glare and eye strain for building occupants.

Melanie Tristram, Jasmax Associate–Revit Manager, says of the use case, “The time saving represents more than the hours we did not have to spend. No one, certainly not our Revit users, wants their valuable time caught up in days of data entry. That process is unsatisfying and it is open to error. Ideate BIMLink improved our efficiency and accuracy.”

Jasmax Associate–BIM Specialist Michelle Leonard adds, “On each and every occasion that we wanted to explore a potential set of interactions, without BIMLink, we would have spent a day and a half of tedium. With BIMLink, we achieved each exploration in about half an hour.”

Bob Palioca, President, Ideate Inc. says about the Study in Success, “We take special pride in supporting sustainable design innovators such as Jasmax and BVN with Ideate-developed solutions for BIM, and we take special delight in sharing their successes with the worldwide AEC community.”

Ideate has published “BVN with Jasmax Makes 3.5 Million Combinations Workable in Minutes with Ideate BIMLink for Revit” online. Download the Study in Success at http://www.ideateinc.com/ideas/case.html.

    Case of the Phantom Keynote

    Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
With apologies to Donald J. Sobol (R.I.P.)

Monday evening, Chief Brown took his seat at the dinner table. He stared off into space. Encyclopedia knew what that meant. He had a Revit riddle he could not solve.

“The Mountain View School Project has a keynote in the legend that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the project,” Chief Brown said. “The case is a puzzle.”

“Tell Leroy about it, dear,” Mrs. Brown urged. “He’s never failed you.” Chief Brown nodded. He took a small notebook from the breast pocket of his uniform. Using his notes, he went over the mystery for Encyclopedia.

“Shortly after the last save to central,” Chief Brown said, “a mysterious keynote popped up in the keynote legend.”

“Is that a big deal?” Mrs. Brown asked.

“It is for Mr. Crabapple, the spec writer,” Chief Brown answered. He looked back at his notes and continued. “Mrs. Corbu, the BIM Manager, searched the entire sheet for the keynote but could not find it anywhere.”

“Did she try Reveal Hidden Elements?” Mrs. Brown asked.

“She did,” Chief Brown said. “She also checked all the tabs on the Visibility Graphics dialog and when she came up empty she contacted us.”

“Aren’t there any other clues?” Mrs. Brown inquired. Mrs. Brown glanced at Encyclopedia as if expecting him to speak. The boy detective was ready to ask his one question. Usually he needed to ask only one question to solve a case at the dinner table.

“Does the phantom keynote have a specific number or text value?” asked Encyclopedia?

“Why, it does happen to say ‘TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE WALL COVER,’ why do you ask?” said Chief Brown.

Encyclopedia whipped out his laptop and queried the RVT file with Ideate Explorer. “I know exactly where that keynote is lurking, and I know why it’s been hiding.”

    HOW DID HE KNOW?

(see video to solve his crime)
